Deborah Richman: Resiliency Is Key To Entrepreneurship
The “Lady in Red” Reveals Secrets to Branding and Reinvention

“Lady in Red” is an evocative image. Deborah Richman succeed in turning the power of that image into her personal brand when she lost the rights to her own name in a lawsuit with a former partner.

Her company Deborah International did well. At its peak, Deborah International held a 40% share in the alternative designer fragrance market. Unfortunately, she and her partner had a falling out and she lost the business she had put a lifetime of effort into creating. Many would crumble under this crushing defeat. Instead, Deborah came back stronger and re-created her company using her brand instead of her identity to regain the attention of the marketplace.

Deborah Richman’s resilience is a hallmark of her entrepreneurial success. In her interview on Inside the Entrepreneurial Mind on ENTREPRENEURradio, she recalls powering through delays, setbacks and Midwestern tornadoes. She shifts her focus from the present to the desire of her future, and resolves to move forward rather than dwelling on what went wrong. “I believe it will all be OK in the end,” she grins, “So if it’s not OK, I know it’s not the end.” Deborah applies this to her business DKUSA, as she applied it to Deborah International. When she lost ownership of Deborah International, she used the same philosophy, allowing her to move on from the disaster of losing her business and flourish on her own as a successful and talented entrepreneur.

Resiliency is the key, Deborah says, to finding success on your entrepreneurial experience. For more information on Deborah Richman and her story, visit
