CEO David Koretz Sees Sales as An Essential Element of Successful Innovation
Technology entrepreneurs have been known to become defensive and wary when they sense a sales pitch; they believe the product should speak for itself. But according to David Koretz, the CEO of Plum, and a very successful tech entrepreneur, this distracts tech entrepreneurs from understanding that the sale is the most important aspect of the work itself. In an interview with ENTREPRENEURradio.org’s program, “Inside The Entrepreneurial Mind”, he says that finding success in the world of technology startups means embracing the sales process, despite its less exhilarating connotation.
Being an entrepreneur in any space requires some sales skill, but to David, all jobs really require that you know how to sell. “I think every bit of what you do is a sales process. You’re either convincing people to take your point of view or you’re not,” he explains. David has years of experience that have helped him to develop these kinds of insights. He built his first business, which focused on home automation technology, when he was still a freshman in high school. Today, he’s sold many concepts to many powerful companies, including an online security software company that he sold to Juniper for $100 million in 2012.
These kind of numbers don’t appear overnight. David invested time, money and long hours to become the sophisticated entrepreneur he is today. The arduous entrepreneurial journey began delivering rewards for David when he discovered the power of sales skills in the technology space. “I never thought of myself as a sales guy,” he said, “and I think nobody else envisioned me that way either.” David’s success began when he mastered the elements of bringing innovation to market.
